Course Title: Icelandic Myths and sagas
Course Number: C2227807
Course Description: This course explores a variety of the tales that were written down in medieval Iceland: notably the Norse myths that Icelandic settlers brought from Scandinavia, and the Sagas that describe the early years of settlement on the island. Beginning with the mythological tales told in the Poetic Edda and the Prose Edda, we will read and discuss the violent creation myth, stories of unruly gods such as Odin, Thor, and Loki, alongside more playful tales of gods, dwarves, heroes and giants. We will also discuss sagas of warrior-poets, such as Egil Skallagrimsson, and some of the great family sagas, which give a vivid insight into the complex lives of the period. Read together, the myths and sagas uncover a world of violence and tenderness, cunning and stupidity, capricious gods and formidable women, preposterous tales and sophisticated poetry, from a time that continues to excite the imagination.
