Drama, Death and the Colour Red: The Guild of St George at Norwich
We may not think of the ‘fine city’ of Norwich as a hot bed of death or drama nor particularly associate it with St George. However, if we cast our minds back 600 years, we find a very different world from that we know now; one ravaged by the black death, where people try to make sense of devastation and grief through dramatic processions and allegiance to a warrior saint. Alison Barker, our popular Art tutor, takes us back in time through the story of the Guild of St George, the drama of its annual procession, evoking the sights, sounds and even smells of Norwich, April 23rd 600 years ago.
